Sixth Grade Musical Instruments!


A Few December Updates!



*Our Christmas Program is Monday Dec. 16th! We will do a 1:00 matinee followed by a 7:00 performance in the high school gym! Please have the fifth and sixth graders wear appropriate school clothes for the program. The fifth grade may wear a Santa hat for their dance, and the sixth grade may wear a costume if it applies to their role in the play! I would like ALL students to arrive ready to perform by 6:45 that evening!

*On Tuesday Dec. 17th, the Sixth Grade will have a pizza party in Mr. Barnes’s room to celebrate their winning Character Ed. video! The pizza will be served at about 11:30! Students are still allowed to eat a regular school lunch that day if they are still hungry after the party!

*Grades and missing assignments will be sent home several times again next week! We would like ALL missing work turned in BEFORE the holiday break!  Keep in mind that second term ends JANUARY 10!!

*Mrs. Stewart would like all students and parents to know the history and science topics she is teaching this month! These are: 
Fifth Grade: Electricity, Revolutionary War
Sixth Grade: Microorganisms, Ancient Rome 

*On Friday Dec. 20, we will have a Read-A-Thon! Students may bring a pillow, blanket, AR BOOK TO READ, and a few snacks. We will also be having an optional UGLY CHRISTMAS SWEATER contest! Prizes will be awarded if you choose to participate!

*School will dismiss at 12:15 on Friday! MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

*School will resume Thursday Jan. 2!

December Book Order!



I have sent the book order for December! The order is due by Monday Dec. 9! If you choose to order, please make checks payable to Scholastic and include your payment and order form in a sealed envelope with your child’s name on the front! Thank you so much!

December Newsletter!



Curriculum
Math: 5th: We have completed and taken the test on Topic 6: Multiplying Decimals. We are now beginning work on Topic 7: Dividing Decimals. The lessons are as follows: Dividing decimals by 10, 100, or 1,000, Estimating Decimal Quotients, Number Sense: Decimal Division, Dividing by a whole number, Dividing a whole number by a decimal, Dividing a decimal by a decimal, Problem solving: Multiple-step problems. We have also been working very hard on Yearly Progress Pro, Math Facts in Flash, and Khan Academy! You can access ALL of these programs through our class blog or school web site! I have also given the students another Math Skills Test to assess growth and the first Fifth Grade Block Test, which is an indicator for the End of Levels Test later in the year. We are working HARD and making PROGRESS!
        6th: We have completed and taken the test on Topic 8: Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers. We will now begin Topic 9: Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers. The lessons are as follows: Understanding Division of Fractions, Dividing a whole number by a fraction, Dividing Fractions, Estimating quotients, Dividing mixed numbers, Solving equations, and Problem solving: look for a pattern. Spelling/Vocabulary: Spelling and vocabulary lists will be given each FULL week this month. Our bonus words will be chosen by: Kyden 12/9, Jaycee 12/16, and Sage 1/6. I am planning on putting the weekly words on the blog, so be watching for them so you can study for the tests at home!
Reading: We will be reading the basals and working on fluency and comprehension. Remember that each Wednesday is BASAL HOMEWORK NIGHT! Students need to bring their basal home to reread the story and write a summary on their planner sheets!
I will be reading with the 6th grade and Mrs. Thomas will be reading with the 5th grade. Make sure your student is doing 20 min of reading Sun-Thurs with a short summary on their planner sheets. Parent Signatures earn 3 EXTRA CREDIT points!
*Each week, students who complete their reading with 5 summaries will receive 1 Read to Ride ticket for the end of the year bike drawing.  
Language Arts: We will continue work in our English Text. We are doing A LOT of review on units 1 and 2. We have also begun practice work in Unit 3: Verbs.
Writing: We will continue work on our Paragraph Of The Week assignments. We will discuss the writing process, and practice each of the 6 plus one traits. Fifth grade will work on Utah Write to prepare for the DWR Assessment after the first of the year!
We will be practicing how to organize a 5 paragraph essay.
Announcements
* Students are expected to earn 60 AR points throughout the course of this year. I am also beginning an incentive for students to read several genres of books for this reading.
*The students have been practicing for their Christmas program! Sixth grade will be doing all of the dialogue in the program, and Fifth grade will be doing a dance with pom poms! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE GREEN TISSUE PAPER DONATIONS! We had just enough for our pom poms! The program is on DECEMBER 16! THERE IS A 1:00 MATINEE AND A 6:30 EVENING PERFORMANCE!  Our school band will be playing at the beginning of the program!
*We will dismiss school for our Holiday Break on December 20! School will resume Thursday December 2! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
*Second Term will end Jan. 10! Make sure your student has ALL assignments turned in!
Spotlight: We will spotlight Calvin 12/5, Gage 12/12, Gaige 12/17, Jaycee 12/18, Phillip 12/19, and Madysen 12/20!!  You may send a class snack to share that day; however, this is optional. Please make sure to complete the All About Me poster to share with the class!
News Assignments: Kyler 12/10, Marcus 12/17, and Akaydeh 1/7.
*Please feel free to visit our class blog at mrsgeorgesfantastic5th6thsplit.blogspot.com to keep up to date on things happening in the classroom and at school.
*I will be continue to send home a printout of grades every two weeks to allow students to check for missing work and see how they are doing! Watch for grades coming home!
*Please watch for your child’s weekly behavior chart. These are half size sheets telling how your child’s behavior was during the week!
*Volunteer Schedule for Mrs. George’s Class!
*Please be aware that you MUST have a background check and badge to volunteer! Ask about these things at the school office.
*If there are any other parents interested in volunteering, please let me know! It is wonderful to have your help!

George/Stewart Class Updates!



*The instrument for Mrs. Stewart is due Tuesday, Nov. 12!
*The Book Report project for Mrs. George is due Friday Nov. 15! Presentations for the reports will begin the following week!
*There will be an extra 3 points added to the gold sheet score for students who are getting PARENT SIGNATURES!
*There will be a Veteran’s Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Milford Cemetery from 10-10:30. We will be leaving the school at 9:45 and returning between 10:30 and 10:45. We would like to ask that ALL students dress in clothes to accommodate the weather. It may be COLD!
*We have selected Makaysha and Kyler to recite the Gettysburg Address during the Ceremony!
*We have sent home the SEP form to review with your child as well as a current score for their Math Skills Test, and a printout of their grades so far in Second Term! Please keep up on missing assignments to achieve excellent grades!
*The November Life Skill is Self Control/Self Discipline!
