Curriculum
Math:
5th:
This month we will continue our Math
Review Journals! These will be a valuable tool when studying for the end of
year tests! Students will also continue working on passing off math facts for
Math All Star Awards during intervention time! In addition we will take the 5/6
Grade Math Skills test again to check for student growth. Students are also
working in our new online program called Aleks Math. Fifth Grade has completed
and taken a test on Topic 8: Numerical Expressions, Patterns, and
Relationships. We are now working in Topic 12: Volume of Solids, and will
continue on to Topic 15 Classifying Plane Figures, Topic 16: Coordinate
Geometry, and Topic 13: Units of Measure.
6th: This month we will continue our Math Review

and taken tests in Topic 2: Variables, Expressions, and Properties, Topic 4:
Solving Equations, and Topic 15: Equations and Graphs. We will now be working
in Topic 12: Ratios, Rates, and Proportions, Topic 13: Solving Proportions,
Topic 14: Understanding Percent, and Topic 16: Measurement.
*Our
fifth and sixth grade classes are now in an Aleks Math competition! The class
with the highest percentage of mastery in Aleks will receive an ice cream
sundae party during the last weeks of school! Good luck!
Spelling/Vocabulary: Spelling and vocabulary
lists will be given for each FULL week this month. I will make an adjustment during
SEP week. Spelling Tests will usually be every Friday. This is also the day
that ALL spelling practice work MUST be turned in for full credit!
Students have access to their spelling lists located in the SCHOOLTO HOME
section on their Wonders Web site! They need to be STUDYING THE WORDS BEFORE
FRIDAY TESTS!
Reading:
We will be
reading the basals and working on fluency, comprehension, and text analysis. Remember
that each Wednesday is BASAL HOMEWORK NIGHT! Students need to bring their basal/Chrome
Book home to reread the story and write a summary on their planner sheet. Make sure your student is doing 20 min of
reading Sun-Thurs with a short summary on their planner sheet. Parent
signatures earn 3 extra credit points!
*Each
week, students who complete their reading with 5 summaries, turned in ON TIME,
will receive 1 Read to Ride ticket for the end of the year bike drawing.
Language
Arts: We
will finish Unit 4: Modifiers, and move in to Unit 5:
Writing: We will continue to
practice the writing process, and six +1 traits of writing. We will continue
working on expository writing in the afternoon. We will also continue to
practice the Four Square Method of organizing writing. We will review the four
types of essays required for fifth/sixth grade: Expository, Persuasive, and
Narrative.

Program for fifth grade boys and girls will be Wed. March 4 at 1:45
*Kindergarten
Registration is March 6!

The District Spelling Bee will be Mon. March 30 at Beaver High from 5-6! Good
Luck Spellers!
*Spring
SEPs are scheduled for Tuesday March 3! There will be NO regular school classes
held on this day. Students and parents need to arrive for their assigned
appointment time to conference with their teachers.
*Student Book Reports for
third term will be due Tues. March 17! St.
Patrick’s Day!
*Third
Quarter ends March 20! There will be a Day Between the Quarters on March 23. NO
School for students on this day!
*Spring
Pictures will be March 20!
*Fourth
Grade will have a Utah History Program April 1 at 1:00.
*Spring
Vacation is April 2, 3, and 6! No School on these days!
*
Students are expected to earn 60 AR points throughout the
course of this year.
*Spotlight:
Keith 3/16. You may send a class snack
on the day we spotlight your child (optional). I will send home all the
necessary materials needed for this activity when it is your student’s turn.
*Chrome
books are becoming more and more useful! Please take great care in handling and
charging the Chrome book each night and remembering to bring the Chrome book in
its case with charger to school EVERY day! Students will be charged in Cub Cash
for Chrome books that have been forgotten at home or not charged the night
before.
*The
Character Education Trait for the month of March is Citizenship.
*News
assignments for this month are as follows Naveah H. March 3, Trinity M. March
10, Kyden P. March 17, Kinley S. March 24, Sage R. March 31, Tyler T. April 14,
and James W. March 21.
Notes
From Mrs. Stewart: Don’t Forgot the Science Fair is Scheduled for April 15th, never
to early to start thinking about different experiments to do.
6th Science: We are learning about the Universe, starting
with the Moon & the Earth.
History: We are studying the Dark Ages, knights in shining
Armor, Castles, Family Crests. A very Fun Unit
5th Science: We will be studying Heredity & Genetics
History: We will be studying the US Constitution, I
encourage parents to talk with their student about what the Constitution is
& how it affects them.

watch for your child’s weekly behavior chart. These are half size sheets
telling how your child’s behavior was during the week!
